Looks like all those people who just gushed over the score in Dark Knight will still be able to enjoy it, but its composers will not be considered for an award at the Oscars.

InContention.com gives us:

Zimmer, Howard and the other three individuals — music editor Alex Gibson, ambient music designer Mel Wesson and composer Lorne Balfe — reportedly signed an affidavit stating that the score was primarily the work of Zimmer and Howard. That apparently wasn’t enough for the majority of the committee, which was also supplied with documentation indicating that more than 60%, but less than 70%, of the score was credited to Zimmer and Howard.

In a nutshell, there are rules that say that to be considered for an Original Score Oscar Award would be disqualified as this expressly excludes from eligibility all scores assembled from the music of more than one composer. (Academy Rule 16 B Part 5 Subsection F – no, I didn’t just make that up)

There are other rules that exclude collected tracks as a soundtrack, or scores used in other mediums etc. This has to be an original piece meant for this movie alone. And this was.

But within their rules, if there are too many cooks in the kitchen, no matter how good the meal, it cannot be recognized. Zimmer and Howard were even given express permission from those credited to take the full credit for the work and were still turfed.

Guess what they say is true. Nice guys finish last.

These guys try to give proper credit to the inspirations and collaborations that lead to their masterpeice and for it they are not recognized for their work? Amazing that “BEST PICTURE” is accomplished with every last hand, volunteer, employee, actor, director, and every other breathing soul that participated in that film, but for the score, if others help out you are considered less than worthy of recognition.

I like this look. He looks like a crazy man with a fantastic hat and ridiculous clothes. I think a character like this should be the opposite of subdued, and we have ourselves here a hatter that’s outlandish.

We have the Documentary short list for the upcoming Oscars. Our friend Kristopher Tapley over at In Contention for the following hookup:

“At the Death House Door”
“The Betrayal (Nerakhoon)”
“Blessed Is the Match: The Life and Death of Hannah Senesh”
“Encounters at the End of the World”
“Fuel”
“The Garden”
“Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts”
“I.O.U.S.A.”
“In a Dream”
“Made in America”
“Man on Wire”
“Pray the Devil Back to Hell”
“Standard Operating Procedure”
“They Killed Sister Dorothy”
“Trouble the Water”

Of the above I have seen I.O.U.S.A. This means I need to hunt down the other 14 and check them out. I find the average documentary to be more interesting than the average film these days. Sadly it isn’t always easy to see these films if they aren’t playing in your city.

Ice Age: The Meltdown is a real joy with great jokes, the story moves very quickly and the animation is stylish. The animated comedy Ice Age was about three prehistoric animals who become unlikely friends: Manny the woolly mammoth (Ray Romano), Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo) and Diego the sabre-toothed tiger (Denis Leary).

Scrat, who was in Ice Age for less than five minutes, had now a bigger role in the sequel Ice Age: The Meltdown. Once again Scrat opens the film, but this time every 15 minutes or so he’s back with another death-defying attempt to get that elusive acorn. Scrat appearances are crucial in the sequel, and considering how the movie ended will sure have a strong role in a third Ice Age.

In ‘Ice Age: The Meltdown’ Manny, Sid and Diego are enjoying the effects of global warming with their neighbours in little valley guarded by giants walls of ice. Everything seems idyllic till Fast Tony, the pessimistic armadillo, points to all the vultures circling the valley. A three day journey to a boat is to be take, in order to save themselves from drowning.

On the way, they meet Ellie (Queen Latifah), possibly the only female mammoth left in the world who – even more – thinks she’s a possum and along with her two “brothers”, are trying to get to the boat. From now on great laughs will be following the story which just began.

Nicole Kidman hinted that she might be considering retiring from her 25 year career as an actress. Maybe to have kids, or whatever else she wants to do. Nothing stopping her.

Yahoo speaks:

During a Sydney press conference today to promote the Down Under premiere of Australia, the Oscar winner hinted she may soon be forsaking the big screen for another round of diaper duty, or other more personal endeavors. “In terms of my future as an actor and stuff, I don’t know,” the 41-year-old mother of three said. “I am in a place in my life where…I’ve had some great opportunities, and I may just choose to have some more children.”

Not that I have any say in the matter, but if she wants to quit acting, I say that is her call. She lists her experience with Australia as a dream for her since she was a child. Though born in Hawaii, she lived her life past the age of 4 in Australia and started acting at the age of 15. She is now 41, so she has put in her time. Let the girl have a life now that she never has to worry about money again.

She is saying she might quit acting, but I hope we get at least one more big film out of her. Her next role (which could be her last if she doesn’t line up more) is playing a post op transexual male opposite Charlize Theron. I would hope that she would want her last role to be remembered by would be something that compliments her beauty and grace as opposed to going out of the business playing a man.

Quit while you are on top and swimming in cash. Nothing wrong with that.

Carrot Top is still trying. Look how that works out?

The movie gets my appreciation of how terror was transformed into courage, because of family members, telephone operators and that cellphone calls to loved ones all made us aware, through writer/Director Paul Greengrass, that they knew two other planes controlled by terrorist had struck the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

United 93 is a movie in which the emotional impact of human beings fighting for their lives is very strong and is twice more believable because was screened and approved by surviving family members of the passengers aboard flight 93.
